What is a Clinical Psychologist?

In Austria, a clinical psychologist is someone who has completed a postgraduate clinical psychology training after having done bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology. A clinical psychologist is not a doctor, does not prescribe medication, but can also work with people who receive medical treatment.

When it comes to the treatment of psychological disorders, medical treatment alone is often insufficient, even though it can be beneficial or necessary in some cases. Talking about and reflecting on psychological pain within the framework of professional support helps ease painful moods and complaints that have been shaped by past experiences and challenging life events.

A clinical psychologist is a mental health professional, who is licensed to treat people who have psychological disorders as well as work with those who need support coping with stressful situations and would like to focus on personal development.
